#tbt - ZEISS completed the development of the first projector for planetariums in August 1923 – enabling a projection planetarium's representation of the artificial night sky to be observed for the first time at the ZEISS facilities in Jena. The ZEISS projector was then brought to the Deutsche Museum, where it provided lifelike representations of cosmic happenings and planetary movements until 1960.

Diglloyd posts the full Batis MTF graphs. “(85mm Batis) Has outstanding micro contrast no less good than the very best Leica M lens”

Share

Zeiss_Batis_mtf_graph

Quick note for Germans: Since today you can preorder the Batis lenses at Amazon: 85mm (Click here) and 25mm (Click here).

Digglloyd is the first site publishing the full graph of the new Batis lenses! Links:
Batis 85mm MTF at Diggloyd.
Batis 25mm MTF at Diggloyd.

Here are some of his early conclusions:

BATIS 85mm:
- Overall contrast is superb wide open, even into the corners.
– Stopping down a bit more delivers outstanding micro contrast at f/5.6, far exceeding most lenses and no less good than the very best Leica M lens.
Has some pincushion distortion. Seems that distortion was traded off for uniformly high sharpness and a smaller/lighter design, knowing that the camera can correct for it automatically (or the raw converter).

BATIS 25mm:
- Modest micro contrast at f/2. However, overall contrast is superb wide open, even into the corners, and that very high overall contrast is critical to visual impact of the image.
– Most notable, the performance is exceptionally uniform at all apertures from center to corner. This is highly unusual for a 25mm lens.

Both lenses are now available for preorder in USA and Europe (UK/Germany)

(SR3) Did Zeiss just “leak” the Sony A7rII with 56 Megapixel sensor?

Share

56Megapixel

Dear SAR readers, take a look at that image:http://ift.tt/1ERne2q. Zeiss says it has been shot with the Sony A7r and the Batis 85mm lens. But notice two strange things:

1) The resolution of the image is 56 Megapixel
2) The 56MP images have no camera name exif info (had been removed by Zeiss).

Now we have three possibilities:
1) Zeiss up-sized the images for some weird reason I cannot understand.
2) This is a A7II multishift created image (feature that will may be added in a future update). But it’s unlikely to be used on non-architectural shooting and without tripod (reflection in the eye shows photographer handholding the cam!).
3) Or they did shoot those images with the A7rII and then removed the EXIF info. What’s your guess?

The new A7rII is rumored to be announced between mid May and early June at last. Stay tuned on SAR!

Magnus:I just saw the post about using the A7R as a sports camera and would like to share my experiences. I think it works great and regularly use my A7R with Sigma 70-200/2,8 and LA-EA4 adapter shooting floor hockey. It’s really not the fastest camera regarding auto focus and continous shooting but it works! For close up action I have my old A580 with Sony 16-50/2,8.
Here is a sample folder with pictures scaled to 4k (2160p height), most of them are ISO3200-6400:

This might be interesting too, It’s the same floor hockey team at the same arena shot with Tamron 150-600 and LA-EA4 adapter on my A7R. This combo sure gets waaay to close indoors but although its ISO6400 I think it works great:

Christian: “I got the opportunity to test my Sony NEX-5T in extreme conditions. I went for a 2:30 hour walk through the city and next to the Charles River. The temperatures were -24F (-31C) degrees with the windchill! I had to face a lot of wind when next to the Charles River, changing lenses was a challenge and quite risky for the sensor. The camera performed really well during this hike, I did not notice any change working in these temperatures. The screen, AF and battery worked perfectly well. Even if the grip is very small, I could still use it with my gloves but I must admit that it wasn’t very convenient. Against all odds, this little camera passed the extreme weather test!

New Sony A7s tests (Vice News shoots with the A7s in the dark).

Share

a7svice

Vice News shot a series about Boko Haram and used the Sony A7s to record in complete dark scenes. You can see the full video on Youtube (Click here). That kind of reportage would be almost impossible to make without the A7s.

3Dkraft (article here):

The video from the “Carnival of Venice 2015″ is now public. It was recorded with Sony A7S, Atomos Shogun, Zeiss FE 16-35/4 OSS and Zeiss FE 1.8/55. The wideangle clips shot from tripod show the real potential of this combination. Unfortunately, the handheld portrait shots moving around the masks show the loss of quality due to the lack of stabilization of the A7S and the FE 1.8/55 even after digital stabilization (warp) in post processing. Scenes like that require a glidecam, brushless gimbal and additional OSS for professional demands. Irrespective of these little technical imperfections, this video shows the art and beauty of the masks and the scenery in Venice Carnival. Beside that, the article shows some zoomable images taken out as single frames from the video showing the quality of the 4K recording (still in process..).

Sony A7s Supercut Review by Stronzvanderploeg:

Overall the Sony A7s an incredibly specced camera especially considering the relatively low price point. If you need low-light or mirrorless full frame, it’s definitely the camera for you but just know, you’ll have to deal with a lot of workarounds and you’ll have to learn and adjust to some of the backwards design decisions.

Mark:

I’m a long time reader of Sony Alpha Rumors (I’ve been using Sony since the A900), and would like to pass on my recent experiments with combining the A7s with a Microsoft Kinect for a mixture of 2D video and 3D animation. I put together a blog article and some example videos showing how to combine the two devices using DepthKit software, and thought it might be interesting for your readers:

“My name is Kay Burn and I shoot photos and video underwater (and aerial work too).
I recently housed my A7s with a Metabones adapter and the Canon 100mm f2.8 IS L in a Nauticam housing and used a prototype port and focus gear to shoot some macro video in the Lembeh Strait in Indonesia. I thought you might be interested to see how it performs;

Zeiss Q&A about the new Batis lenses (confirms in lens stabilization, made in Japan, unlimited OLED lifetime).

On Facebook Zeiss answered many questions from their followers:

1) Yes, the Batis 1.8/85 has optical image stabilization
2) The displays are not limited in their lifetime. After many years of intensive use, they will become darker. If sometime they might be difficult to read, they can be easily exchanged by our ZEISS service.
3) Batis lenses use different components than Sony or Sony/ZEISS lenses.
4) Our Batis lenses are primarily made of high-quality plastics, aluminum and optical glass.
5) ZEISS Batis lenses are made in Japan.
6) MTF charts will be available in June.

Both lenses are now available for preorder at BH and Adorama:

Sony Tidbits (with Malawi wildlife protection video sponsored by Sony).

Share

The video on top has been shoot by Jamie Unwin with the great help from Sony UK. I am glad to hear that Sony sponsors that kind of projects. That iw what Jamie told me:

“I’m an advocate for Sony UK, my latest film about The Illegal WIldlife Trade in Malawi, Africa has just been released.
This year Malawi stands up to wildlife crime, I spent my Christmas producing a short 8 minute film that was shown to the President of Malawi, Peter Mutharika the film was then aired on national TV in Malawi. As a result the president has decided to burn the entirety of Malawi’s Ivory stock piles as a clear signal to the world that Malawi is serious about protecting its wildlife. The film worked as a persuasive and deterrent conservation tool, to show the people of Malawi that if they protect their wildlife and natural places it will benefit them economically by attracting tourism, creating a spiral of economic benefits. The film also exposed that Malawi is taking wildlife crime seriously, enforcing prison sentences to those who commit the crimes.

We know you have a big media following and as we are trying to reach as many people as possible it would be incredibly beneficial if you would share the film for us.

Sony provided all the equipment to make the film. it was entirely shot on using the Sony a77mk2 and a99.
Many thanks,
Jamie Unwin”

Zeis says new Batis lenses are focus by wire like all other Sony/Zeiss FE lenses.

Share

Zeiss_Batis

SAR reader Luke managed to get an answer from Zeiss whether the new Batis lens line have focus by wire or not. Zeiss answered that:

The Batis lenses have “focus by wire”. Like the same innovative focusing features like the Sony/Zeiss FE type lenses. To allow quick and also precise manual focusing with an AF lens,  the focusing distance will change according to the speed you turn the focusing ring. If you prefer mechanically coupled focusing rings, the LOXIA lenses might be the best solution for you.

Thanks Luke for sharing Zeiss answer!

Sony says: “cameras with a translucent mirror are not forgotten”.

The polish site Optyczne was present at the London press conference from Sony. They report:

During the presentation the speaker pointed out the continuous development of Sony Alpha DSLR system and emphasized that despite strong offensive on the mirrorless market  cameras with a translucent mirror are not forgotten.

The sideshow title was “Sony maintains commitment to A-mount“.

Yesterday Sony showed the two new A-mount lenses and their two new 30x cameras at the event. There was no “hint” at all about a possible new A-mount camera coming soon. For all we know new E-mount and RX cameras “only” are coming in May-June.

Surprise! There is indeed an announcement today: Two new “updated” A-mount lenses!

Share

Bildschirmfoto 2015-04-23 um 16.34.41
Images via ePhotozine!

Surprise! Today Sony announced the release of the two new A-mount lenses! Here is the press text via ePhotozine:

Sony has enhanced its line-up of α A-mount interchangeable lenses with two enhanced versions of its full-frame ZEISS Vario-Sonnar large-aperture standard zoom and wide-angle zoom lenses.

Photo professionals and discerning enthusiasts will welcome the addition of the Vario-Sonnar T* 24-70mm F2.8 ZA SSM II (SAL2470Z2) standard zoom and Vario-Sonnar T* 16-35mm F2.8 ZA SSM II (SAL1635Z2) wide angle zoom, both delivering significant improvements in image quality, ghost reduction and AF performance, together with a new dust and moisture- resistant design.

The SAL2470Z2 and SAL1635Z2 are ideal partners for Sony’s A-mount family of interchangeable lens cameras, including the highly acclaimed α99 and α77 II. With the addition of an optional mount adaptor they’re also compatible with E-mount cameras such as the α7 series.

Uncompromising image quality is a hallmark of every ZEISS Vario-Sonnar lens. It’s taken to new levels with the SAL2470Z2 and SAL1635Z2 that feature a ZEISS T* coating on optical surfaces that achieves even greater reduction in ghosting, especially with tricky against-the-light shots.

Autofocus performance of the SSM (Super Sonic wave Motor) system in both lenses has also been uprated significantly. Faster, more powerful processing in the lens LSI increases AF accuracy, delivering approximately 4x the subject tracking speed of each lens’s predecessor – a perfect partner to the 4D Focus system in the α77 II – making it ideal for shots of fast-moving action subjects like wildlife, sports and active children.

Both models also feature a new dust and moisture-resistant design that makes the SAL2470Z2 and SAL1635Z2 even more appealing options for challenging outdoor assignments.

Zeiss_new_lens - Copy

Vario-Sonnar T* 24-70mm F2.8 ZA SSM II

Covering a popular 24-70mm range of focal lengths, this high-performance full-frame zoom delivers imaging quality you’d expect from a prime lens.

From everyday snapshots to handheld portraits, landscapes and wildlife, you’ll enjoy legendary ZEISS® sharpness and contrast at all focal lengths. With a bright constant F2.8 maximum aperture right across the zoom range, the SAL2470Z2 is a dependable partner for low-light portraits, dim interiors and night-time scenes.

Aspherical and ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements are combined in a precision optical design that’s highly effective at suppressing aberration. You’ll appreciate the difference with high contrast and faithful reproduction of delicate gradations.

ZEISS16-35 - Copy

Vario-Sonnar T* 16-35mm F2.8 ZA SSM II

This large aperture, wide angle zoom is equally capable of capturing spectacular scenery or bustling street scenes. With a bright F2.8 maximum aperture at all zoom settings, it’s also ideal for handheld shooting at twilight or in dimly-lit interiors.

The precision optical design features aspherical lens elements that minimise distortion. In addition, ED (Extra-low Dispersion) and Super ED glass elements provide superior contrast, resolution, and colour fidelity.

The new SAL2470Z2 and SAL1635Z2 α A-mount ZEISS lenses from Sony are available to pre-order now.

POLL:
Now let’s see how many SAR readers will really buy those lenses:
Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll.

SAR admin opinions:
Unlike the other FE lenses I do not think these new lenses are heavily overpriced. They are weather sealed, build quality is top and I am sure they have top-notch image quality too, the 85mm has optical stabilization and the OLED display may turn out to be more than just a useful gimmick.

Reminder: New Zeiss Batis key features:
1) They are the first Full Frame Zeiss lenses with autofocus
2) Those are the first worldwide lenses with OLED display on lens to show aperture and depth of field info. And at startup it reminds you what you spent $$$ for with a “ZEISS” writing :)
3) The 85mm f/1.8 is the first Zeiss with optical stabilization.

Zeiss launches a new autofocus Full Frame lens line for Sony FE!

That's quite a surprise! Today Zeiss announced a completely new line of lenses for Sony FE cameras! Unlike Loxia those lenses have autofocus and a huge OLED display on the lens!

Preorder links:
Zeiss Batis 85mm f/1.8 lens at Adorama (Click here)
Zeiss Batis 25mm f/2.0 lens at Adorama (Click here)
Lens shade for 25mm at Adorama (Click here)
Lens shade for 85mm at Adorama (Click here)

And here is the press text:

The new ZEISS Batis 2/25 and 1.8/85 lenses are the first full-frame autofocus lenses with an OLED display for the mirrorless Sony α series and therefore the pioneers of a new era. As professional tools, they enable outstanding outcomes with optimal image performance, impressive contrast and maximum resolution down to the very last detail.
The innovative OLED display shows the distance of the focal plane from the camera system and the depth of fields, therefore ideally supporting creative image composition. For the demanding photographer, the OLED display is an absolute highlight – an innovation that is currently unparalleled in camera lenses.  ZEISS Batis lenses are available in a wide-angle and portrait focal length and are the perfect match for the existing lenses offered for the system. The ZEISS Batis 2/25 and Batis 1.8/85 lenses will be available for purchase from July 2015 – place your order now!

(SR4) Big surprise: Zeiss to announce a new BATIS line for FE? Autfocus 25mm f/2.0 and 85mm f/1.8 FE lenses coming!

Share

It’s now the third source within weeks that tells me this. Zeiss has a huge suprise for the FE system. They are going to launch a new autofocus lens line system for the FE mount! This is the latest message I got:

New Zeiss Batis lenses will be announced today. This is a new line for FF E-Mount. Like the Touits for APS-C.  2/25 and 1,8/85 will be available in summer 2015.

Zeiss teases a new lens for mirrorless system cameras!

Share

Zeiss posted a teaser of a new lens on their Facebook page. It’s a new “smooth” lens for mirrorless system cameras. And as far as I know this is NOT a new Loxia lens. I am working on the rumors because I already got a quite surprising rumor a couple of days ago. Give me some time to check it out!

What we can “hope” to get on April 23 (RX1-X and RX100m4?)

Share

April23

Sony has a scheduled press briefing on Thursday April 23. And Wikileaks hinted that new RX and A7 and A6xxx cameras would be announced within April and June. So far this is what we can hope to get soon:

To be announced on April 23?
– RX1-X camera (specs unclear but likely a FF camera with 35mm f/1.8 Zeiss lens).
– RX100m4 (20MP Four Thirds sensor camera with 4K recording)

To be announced in May?
– A7rII (36Mp, 5 axis and same A7II body improvements)
– A6xxx (24MP APS-C sensor and 3 or 5 axis stabilization).

P.S.: A-mount news (camera and lenses) will follow in August/September?

By the way. Also the Sony Canada marketing roadmap seems to confirm there will be new cameras. Their RX (late April) and Alpha (mid May) campaign would match those announcements.

Jerry:I have now owned both a Sony a7 and an a7II.
One of the very few shortcomings, as noted in practically all reviews on these cameras though, is the fact that if you want to use its LCD finder on the back, and hold the camera down at waist level, which in many cases shades the camera’s eyepiece sensor heavily, the sensor within the EVF’s rubber hood thinks the camera is being held to your eye and turns the LCD completely off in favor of the EVF only. Of course, there’s the menu setting on the camera to set one or the other SOLELY, but this is a hassle when you need to switch back and forth frequently .
I finally discovered a simple fix to remedy this very aggravating situation using a product called Light Dims, which are little  inexpensive, stick-on pre-cot pieces of a neutral gray shading material actually made for putting over glaring, bright LED’s that are overly bright and irritate you at night or in dark places.
By simply cutting a 3mm X 5mm piece of this material and applying it over the left half of the EVF sensor window, the sensor functions perfectly and the LCD remains on even in very low light, plus the EVF still switches on again automatically when the camera is held up to your eye! This is an incredibly simple fix that many Sony a7 users have wrestled with for months and have hoped and hoped that Sony would correct via a firmware update! It seems to work for all the Sony a7 models including the a7, a7R, a7II and a7S. These little gadgets are available on Amazon (http://ift.tt/1HpWNjk) or directly from the company at: www.lightdims.com
I am in no way affiliated with the company and have no vested interest. I just discovered this from another post on a Sony a7 forum, tried it and was super impressed.

Peter:i Tried SONY a6000 + HOYA 28mm F2.8 reverse for macro shooting. This is probably cheapest alternative for macro lens. Work perfectly on Full Frame A7R as well.
