(SR3) Rumor about a medium format Sony surfaces (again)

Image of a Mamiya 7 (here on eBay) from Roma Nikolaev.

Also Photorumors got word (reliable?) on a Sony medium format camera coming the coming 12 months. Nothing new as this rumor is floating on the web since months now (see article here). My sources once told me the Sony medium Format Camera is a sort of digital Mamiya 7 (here on eBay). But the camera should look better and be smaller. So here are the specs/details rumored so far:

– Fixed lens RX camera

– Zeiss prime (35mm FF equivalent)

– 50 megapixel sensors (same used by new Hasselblad/PhaseOne/Pentax medium formats)

– Built-in EVF

– Smaller and cheaper(!) than any other medium format cameras out there. It’s cheaper than the new Pentax 645

All we know from recent interviews is that Sony said such a camera “is possible” to make for Sony and they also stressed to say that they have unique innovative products to come in 2015. Let’s hope this one is one of them!

Good news: Loxia 35mm is “distinctly and visibly better” than the ZM version!

On left the Loxia 35mm corner at f/2.0. On right the ZM at f/2.0 (Image 3D-Kraft)

As you know the new Zeiss Loxia FE lenses are based on the current Zeiss ZM lens design. There were some worries that the new Loxia may be just the same ZM lenses with an E as mount. Well 3D-Kraft compared the new Loxia 35mm lenses with the “older” ZM 35mm lens. And as you see form the images on top there is a clear optical advantage on the Loxia. 3D-Kraft writes:

Although the Zeiss Loxia 2/35 uses a similiar (and proven) lens design like the ZM Biogon 2/35 (designed for range finder cameras), it is distinctly and visibly better optimized to requirements of the Sony digital A7 / A7R sensors.

ZEISS Location in Focus: Munich, Germany

Munich is the capital of the state of Bavaria, and Germany’s third largest city. As well as home to several major universities, it is also a major international center of business, and the engineering and medical industries. Some of the most distinguished research establishments in Germany are located here, so it’s no wonder that two major branches of the ZEISS Group – the Medical Technology and Microscopy business groups – also call this city home.

Besides housing software development and product management, the ZEISS Microscopy Labs offer customers the opportunity to experience ZEISS technology first-hand. Specialists in the fully equipped life science labs assist researchers in perfect sample preparation and molecular genetic analyses and imaging using our most advanced light and electron microscopy systems. This work of art is far older than the cave paintings from Lascaux – actually about 35 million years. That's the age of the rock shown in this picture – a sample of diorite from Adamello (Italy).

New Zeiss 16-35mm RAW image samples (and still selling well in US).

Zeiss_16-35mm

The Zeiss 16-35mm is still leading the order ranking at Amazon US (full list here).

VeryBigLobo is so kind to share the first RAW file 16-35mm samples freely for download. He also made a quick comparison with the A-mount 16-35mm and says the A-mount lens performed worse and has more smearing on corners. But take such conclusion with a grain of salt. You need proper time and location to make a fair comparison.

Cameras.reviewed shared their hands-on thoughts about the lens and do write:

It’s made of metal, has a pleasant heft, and feels like it’s meant to be used—not just put on a shelf and admired.

The updated Sony FE lens roadmap (and a few additional notes).

Sony.net is now displaying the new Sony FE lens roadmap PDF file. A couple of thoughts I wanna share:

1) The “Large Aperture prime” is likely the rumored 85mm lens. Should be f/1.4. If it’s f/1.2 I will jump for joy and then cry because of the many $$$ Sony will charge on it :)

2) I expect the Large Aperture prime lens to be announced early 2015. But all other Six lenses (see grey lines) are likely to be available between end of 2015 and early 2016

3) Finally a Zeiss f/1.4 lens to come. This will quite down those people who were worried that FE lenses would always be 1 stop slower than their A-mount counter part

4) Among the six 2015 lenses there will be certainly tele primes and tele zooms.

5) Note that Zeiss will announce more Loxia manual FE lenses during 2015. These are not(!) included in the roadmap! And I heard of at least three more Loxias to come in 2015!

The lens I like most is the 35mm Zeiss f/1.4 But also the 24-240mm could be a n interesting lens for everyday use or travel (although quite big).

The A-mount frustration post! What should Sony do?

The A-mount future slide showed by Sony last yer (the hidden camera was the A77II)

Sony just like every company has a roadmap of products already planned for the coming 1-2 years. And usually only minor changes can happen in between. It’s not an easy task, but my job is to get tidbits about that roadmap. The strange thing that happened this year at Photokina is the following: The same kind of trusted source that told me correctly about the FE lenses like the 16-35mm Zeiss, 90mm macro, QX1, Loxia lenses the 85mm lens (on new roadmap as large aperture prime) also told me there would be updated A-mount lenses at Photokina.

Of course I am surprised to hear this didn’t happen. Now, obviously you can believe the 2-3 sources who shared the A-mount info were simply wrong. And I hope that’s the case. But it’s my believe for now that something must have happened in those last two months. Something that lead Sony to “freeze” the A-mount lens announcement.

Now, fact is, last year Sony said they are fully committed to the A-mount system. Also a Fact is they are pushing E-mount now and they did not mention one single time A-mount during their 1 hour Photokina press conference. And they now mix the A and E-mount stuff under the same “Alpha Lens” brand which is pretty confusing. I think it’s time for Sony to clear things out about the A-mount future. They have two options:

1) Make a clears statement pro A-mount with a proper lens/camera roadmap to really convince us about that.

2) Just confess they will focus on E-mount and maybe offer all A-mount camera owners and E-mount camera in exchange with adapter for free.

You readers tell me if I am right on that. Write down all your frustration in our comment system!!!

Note: Here are a couple of pro A-mount statement from Sony:

September 2013: “Rest assured that we will further develop the A-mount system together with the E-mount,” (SAR reader Brad)

October 2013: Sony UK’s Alpha product manager Takahiro Hirata, said: ‘We will not quit A-mount product lines. We will have both product lines.’ (Amateur Photographer).

October 2013: “Sony are still committed to the A-mount system.” (Photographyblog).

November 2013: Kimio Maki is Senior General Manager at Sony’s Digital Imaging: “for A mount we can realize superior image quality with better new technologies” (Dpreview).

To end a good news: The BIG Sony January announcement is 100% confirmed.

(SR5) Full Zeiss 16-35mm FE lens MTF and design graph.

I got more images about the new Zeiss 16-35mm f/4.0 FE OSS lens that will be announced tomorrow. As you know you can follow the event live here at SAR at 16:00 Berlin time!

Here are two graphs about the new lens:

I “fear” that all other lenses that will be announced tomorrow will hit the market in 2015 only. Because so far I didn’t get detailed info on them…probably because Sony will not unveil the final info tomorrow (just general introduction).

To end with a good news: After Pohotkina I can probably start with new rumors about the High Resolution cameras and some RX camera info I got in these days.

Follow the Sony announcement live here on SAR on Monday Sept 15 at 16:00 Berlin time. That’s:

7am in San Francisco

10 am in NYC

15:00 in London

23:00 in Tokyo.

Crystallography rocks! #5

Like a colorful coral in the Turkish sea: this is a fine-grained association of plagioclase and worm-like quartz (“myrmekite”) in an amphibolite-facies metapelite (kinzigite) from the Ivrea Zone (Italy). Quartz forms the worm-like thin parts and, after feldspar, is the second most abundant mineral in the Earth's continental crust.

This is the first image of the new Zeiss 16-35mm f/4.0 FE OSS lens that will be announced on Monday (16:00 Berlin time). It should cost around 1350 Euro. Sony will likely introduce two more FE lenses although I don’t know if these will be ready for sale this year or more likely be on market in 2015 only (90mm macro and a fast Zeiss prime should come). Stay tuned on SAR!

Follow the Sony announcement live here on SAR on Monday Sept 15 at 16:00 Berlin time. That’s:

(SR4) 90mm macro G FE almost sure to come. Follow announcement live on Monday on SAR!

On Monday (Sept 15) at 16:00 Berlin time Sony will finally announced the new A and E-mount lenses. Among them we will have the new 16-35mm f/4.0 FE Zeiss, the 90mm G FE macro, and likely an updated 35mm f/1.4 and 70-300mm A-mount lens. As you see on the official roadmap image on top there should be also a fast prime lens from Sony but I am not sure it will be available within 2014. Anyway, this could be the fast 85mm lens. Sony may also shows us an updated FE roadmap with some general info about the lens to come in 2015.

There could be also new accessories and one of them should be the new flash for the A7 camera series. And like I told you before we have no info about any other new camera that could be announced on Monday. But I hope Sony will officially tease us about the next very BIG camera announcement coming in January!

So follow the event live here on SAR on Monday Sept 15 at 16:00 Berlin time. That’s:

7am in San Francisco

10 am in NYC

15:00 in London

3am (03:00) of Tuesday 16 in Tokyo.

Happy 198th Birthday, Carl Zeiss!

198 years ago today, our company’s founding father Carl Friedrich Zeiss was born. The fifth of 12 children, he grew up in Weimar, Germany, and went on to attend the University of Jena.

As a young student, Carl Zeiss showed a keen interest in technology, and after passing the required exam of the grand ducal office for above ground infrastructure, he was granted a license to manufacture and sell mechanical and optical instruments and to set up a mechanical workshop.

On 17 November 1846, he opened a small workshop in Jena with a fund of 100 Thalers, laying the foundation of our company's great technological history and heritage. #TBT
