Cooperation of ZEISS with the Graduate School of Optics and Photonics in Karlsruhe, Germany

Did you know that the Karlsruhe School of Optics and Photonics KSOP (KIT) (KSOP) offers an innovative program of masters and doctorate courses? In conjunction with ZEISS, the school provides students with the possibility of gaining insights into practice. Read the interview with Tuan Anh to find out more about the interchange between theory and practice.

• Can you tell us who you are and about your background?

Tuan Anh: My Name is Tuan Anh. Before coming to Germany, I studied photonics and lasers. For me, Germany has the most advances in the field of optics and engineering, and when I read the KSOP brochure, I found it was the perfect match for my needs.

• Could you tell us a bit about your work at ZEISS and the topic of your Master’s thesis?

Tuan Anh: The topic of my thesis is to test a lightfield camera on the optical metrology machine. I work in the sensoric department. My job here is to conduct measurements to qualify optical sensors, specifically making the setup, deriving a mathematical model, taking measurements and doing statistical analysis.

• How do you like Oberkochen?

Tuan Anh: I personally like small towns. I really like the local area here. The weather is quite nice in the summer, the air is fresh and the surroundings are quiet. There are many hills and small towns around that I can travel to in my leisure time.

• What do you like most about the KSOP Master’s Program and what part of your studies best prepares you for your career?

Tuan Anh: I really like the international environment in KSOP - you have different people from different countries and this offers you the possibility to open your eyes a little bit more. Concerning my studies, my plan for the future is to go into the field of systems engineering, so I really like the diverse topics that they offer in KSOP. I have been able to learn a lot from both the engineering and theoretical perspectives, and gain a basic understanding in a very broad field of optics.

• What do you like most about your job at ZEISS?

Tuan Anh: For me, it´s the perfect mixture because I can do a lot of different things. My first impression was really good. My co-workers are very knowledgeable and helpful. Also, I can learn about the workflow here and about how to solve engineering problems effectively.

• What are your future plans?

Tuan Anh: I will finish my thesis in September Then, I would like to pursue further studies for a few more years, to do something challenging and exciting. Germany is still a good option for me at the moment for a PhD in the field of optical engineering.

(SR3) Sony will announce plenty of new A and E-mount lenses at Photokina.

An anonymous source told me that Sony is about to announce a whole bunch of new A and E-mount lenses for the Photokina show in September. But he also pointed out that most of these lenses will be native E-mounts.

In the past months I posted some lens info like the 16-35mm f/4,0 FE Zeiss, 24-105mm A-mount, the fast FE prime, the four (or five) manual focusing FE Zeiss and so on. I hope to have a SR5 confirmed list of the new lenses soon.

I thank the source for sharing the info and I hope he can spill out some camera info too ;)

Michael:Hi Andrea, Album @ Flickr http://ift.tt/1pmz2Mz.

It took me quit a while considering upgrade from the M2 to M3, and finally I did upgraded, here is my comparison before I let go the M2 to next owner.

M3 has wider zoom of 24mm (FF equiv.) comparing to M2 28mm, photo @ http://ift.tt/1pmz0nS

However M3′s 24mm (FF equiv.) is not as wide as in A6000, photo @ http://ift.tt/1t6zWDz

M3 has better control of CA at wide-open aperture f/1.8, photo @ http://ift.tt/1t6zWDB

Built-in ND filter is very useful for long exposure under day light, photo @ http://ift.tt/1pmz2ME

M3 still can zoom to 100mm or more by using the Clear-Image-Zoom (70mm x1.5 or x2.0), photo @ http://ift.tt/1t6zWTP

M3 does have longer lens throat 15mm vs 11mm by M2, photo @ http://ift.tt/1pmz0nW

M3 start up is faster

M3 time gap between shoot-to-shoot is faster

M3 auto-focus is faster

More testing I will do next is…

More comparison with A6000 & 16-50mm (24-70mm in FF equiv.) power zoom kit lens

Compare video quality with different codec

(SR4) First curved sensor for the Xperia Z3X and the New RX FF (on market in 2015).

The pattern is now pretty clear and these are the first devices that will almost certainly feature the new Sony curved sensor tech:

1) The 2/3 inch 22 Megpaixel curved sensor with f/1.2 lens will be used by the next Xperia Z3X. The images of the camera have been leaked by Digi-wo.com.

2) The Full Frame RX (RX2?) will feature a Full Frame curved sensor and a very compact 35mm f/1.8 Zeiss lens. it will become the most compact Full Frame ever made.

Both will hit the market in early 2015!

Cooperation of ZEISS with the Graduate School of Optics and Photonics in Karlsruhe

Did you know that the Karlsruhe School of Photonics (KSOP) offers an innovative program of masters and doctorate courses? In conjunction with ZEISS, the school provides students with the possibility of gaining insights into practice. Read the interview with Javier to find out more about the interchange between theory and practice.

• Can you tell me who you are and where you are from?

Javier: I was born in Colombia. I am an electrical engineer and I obtained my bachelor degree in Colombia. That same year, I moved to Argentina to work as an engineer. Then, looking for career advancement, I decided to apply for a place on a Master’s program. A fellow student from my electrical engineering degree recommended KSOP. She had been in KSOP and graduated from the program a year before. So I decided to apply and now here I am in my last semester writing my thesis at ZEISS.

• Could you tell us a bit about your work at ZEISS and the topic of your Master’s thesis?

Javier: I am working in Industrial Metrology, where I am involved in the integration of a new concept sensor on a high-precision coordinate measurement machine. My main task is to enable the pose calibration of the sensor, and to carry out evaluations and modifications.

• How do you like Oberkochen?

Javier: If we compare sizes and lifestyles, coming from Colombia or Argentina to Oberkochen is a big leap and a challenge. I really like my work and am enjoying the time in Oberkochen and Aalen. There are a lot of activities to do. For example, I’ve already gotten involved in the “Aktiv Mann” soccer team TSV-Oberkochen-Könnigsbronn, and that helps me to come into contact with people. Plus, I’m a new member of the ZEISS International Club. For my first month, I think it’s a really good start.

• What do you like most about the KSOP Master’s Program and what part of your studies best prepares you for your career?

Javier: I really like the internationality of the program. The fact of having colleagues from so many different science and/or engineering backgrounds and having the opportunity to work with them and learn how they approach finding solutions enhances my expertise all the time. Also, meeting people from all over the world gives you a better perspective, as well as tolerance and enrichment in your personal growth.

• What do you like most about your job at ZEISS?

Javier: I really like to work in my department as there are a lot of open-minded people who are willing to teach me. Of course, I am still at the learning stage. Working for ZEISS in Industrial Metrology gives me the opportunity to work with experienced colleagues and increase my knowledge.

• What are your future plans?

Javier: I’ll finish my thesis in November and because of my industrial and engineering background, I will go more in this direction. A specific field is not clear as yet, but I like challenges and I am eager to learn more.

(SR4) First specs of the curved sensor 2/3 inch sensor camera with 20mm f/1.2 lens!

A couple of weeks I told you how Sony developed a 2/3 inch and a Full Frame curved sensor. Both are ready for production. We now got our hands on the specs of the 2/3 inch sensor camera that Sony will launch soon at Photokina. It will be the worlds first curved sensor camera!

The 22 Megapixel curved sensor has a dynamic range of 10.8 stop at ISO 640, SNR of 41.1DB at ISO 400 and the astonishing 20mm (FF equivalent) f/1.2 G lens is only 6mm thick! This could be the smallest and highest quality compact camera ever made. The 2/3 inch curved sensor has the same signal to ratio of the Canon 5dMarkIII !!!

The chances stay very high that Sony will also launch a Full Frame curved sensor camera with a damn compact Zeiss 35mm f/1.8 lens. Will this be the first Full Frame camera that fits in your pocket???

Here are the lens specs of the 2/3 inch camera:

ZEISS Location in Focus – Planetariums Jena, Germany

Besides being home to the world’s longest operating planetarium, Jena is also the manufacturing location of the latest planetarium technologies. ZEISS has been producing opto-mechanical planetarium projectors since 1923 and digital planetarium projectors since 2003. The Zeiss Planetarium Jena features a UNIVERSARIUM projector that projects 9100 stars onto the 23-meter dome. The glass fiber optics that produce the brightly shining stars are threaded by hand. The star projector is combined with a VELVET System which was specially developed by ZEISS and produced for 360-degree fulldome projection. This system enables extremely high-resolution films, videos and visualizations piloted live – such as the space flight through the universe – to be projected onto the dome surface. ZEISS offers different projectors for every dome size, from the large dome like the one in the world's largest planetarium in Nagoya, Japan to the unique solution for the Grand Casino in Baden, Switzerland.

Other highlights include the mini-planetarium with a 4.6 meter dome and the treasure chamber of optics. In the planetarium, visitors can experience the capabilities of modern optical-mechanical projectors from ZEISS: these systems provide an unrivaled, realistic depiction of the night sky and countless visualization possibilities. The treasure chamber of optics houses some items of historical significance, for example a hand-held telescope that was taken from Napoleon Bonaparte (1769–1821) after the Battle of Waterloo.
