Sony NEX-6 still a bestseller in US: Maybe Sony should make more APS-C E-mount lenses too…

APS-C E-mount cameras are literally dominating the Amazon mirrorless ranking (list here).

We are all waiting to see the new stuff at Photokina. But in the meantime …for months now(!) the most sold popular Sony camera at Amazon US (Click here to see the ranking) is the Sony NEX-6.

It’s a bit pity that only Sony E-mount FF lenses are about to be announced soon (16-35mm Zeiss, powerzoom lens and the Zeiss Loxia). Sony should really try to support those many APS-C E-mount owners and make some lenses for them too.

P.S.: Of course they can use the FE lenses too, but it’s really not the same thing (increased weight, increased price, missing focal lengths and so on…).

Reminder: Sony US is selling plenty of discounted ref. cameras:

$700 off on the RX1R (Click here).

$80 off on the RX100 (Click here).

$120 off on the A77 with kit lens (Click here).

Few A900 bodies (Click here).

$74 off on the QX100 (Click here).

Samys sells Open Box and $300 off A7r bodies (Click here).

(SR5) ILCE-QX1 will cost €450. It is almost the same size as the qx100.

On September 3 we will get the next Sony product announcement. And we will see the new QX30 (30x zoom) module and the ILCE-QX1 APS-C E-mount module. I have been told the price of the ILCE-QX1 will be 450 Euro and the size about the same of the current QX100 (here one Bay).

Reminder: ON Monday/Tuesday Zeiss will announce the new Loxia lens series.

The biggest hit at Photokina? It could be the Samsung NX1!

Well, we are slowly getting a clear picture about what's coming.

1) Sony will focus on their A-mount stuff and "only" announced lenses for their mirrorless system (Zeiss Loxia and "normal" FE Sony lenses).

2) Panasonic will announce the LX1000 (fixed lens) and GM2 4K capable cameras

3) Olympus will announced the E-Pl7 today and is coming with a Silver E-M1 and new 40-150mm Pro lenses in a few days.

4) Canon/Nikon: Nothing serious on the horizon

5) Fuji "could" but also "could not" showcase a prototype of the 2015 X-PRO 2

So what could become the big hit at Photokina? Well it will come from an unexpected company: Samsung!

I have been told by sources the camera has the potential to become the best APS-C camera on market. It has a terrific EVF, over 10fps, brand new close to 30MP sensor and fastest AF on market. It looks like a modern camera (no retro style says redcrow).

I really can't wait to learn more about that camera....

(SR5) Zeiss will soon announce the new “Loxia” lens line for Sony Full Frame E-mount!

The Zeiss trademarked logo at Trademarkia.com

Zeiss will soon announce a new line of lenses named “Loxia”. It will be made for the Full Frame Sony E-mount system! The characteristic of those lenses are:

- They are native E-mount Full Frame lenses

- These are designed and made by Zeiss itself. These are not Zeiss branded and Sony manufactured lenses like the Zeiss 55mm f/1.8 FE for example.

- These are manual focusing prime lenses (allows a more compact design).

- They have a physical aperture ring on the lens.

- Made of very high material quality.

- There will be many of such lenses coming the next 12 months.

Exciting!!! Stay tuned on SAR. I am working to get the lens specs as soon as it gets….

I have no specs of the new lenses yet but Zeiss already made manual focusing lenses for “non-DSLR”. These are the Zeiss “Full Frame” ZM analog camera lenses:

Sony 70-200mm F4 G series FE Lens Review

A7s for Astrophotography at 3D-Kraft.

A7s vs GH4 at DSLRmagazine (google translation here).

capturing still frames off Sony video footage (PMRphoto).

JT:people always asking which 135mm ZA or ZF. Have a look at this: http://ift.tt/VlmtJs

Andrei:I’m Andrei, a happy new owner of the A7s. As a long time reader, I wanted to share with you a slow motion S-Log 2 evening rain test and some first thoughts. http://ift.tt/Vlmsp8

Everything was shot at 120 fps 270p with ISO values over 3200. Light was less than ideal and I had a hard time getting perfect exposure because of the pouring rain. The lens is the Sony Zeiss Vario-Tessar T* FE 24-70mm F4 ZA OSS. Shot in S-Log 2, with modified profile, graded with Film Convert.

Observations:

- The lens is much better than some say. It’s just not as great as the 55mm 1.8 or 35mm 2.8, but OSS is very good and colour reproduction very nice. I’m not a pixel-peeper.

- The A7s held up well in the pouring rain, I only had an umbrella so lots of raindrops spilled on the camera and the lens.

- After some 2 hours of shooting, some blue hot pixels appeared which I noticed only afterwards. Scared, I thought of sending the camera back as it is still new, but then I read online that sony maps out “bad” pixels in software and fixes them on the fly. To force a remap just set the date to a month in advance and turn the camera off. It will take a picture before shutting off, after which they’re magically gone. You can set the date back afterwards. Hope the sensor is fine though…

Jorge:Good story on Sony 50 http://ift.tt/VlmtJu

According to one source Sony will launch a 35mm f/1.4 G lens replacement soon. And this is certainly a welcome news. This is one of the oldest “sony” lenses launched back in 2006. And now we have cheaper and better alternatives like the Sigma ART 35mm lens ($899 here at Amazon). I don’t know the price but I have been told the replacement will NOT be Zeiss branded.

(SR4) Fast 85mm FE lens prime is on roadmap (to be disclosed at Photokina).

A FAKE rendering of a possible Sony 85mm f/1.8 FE lens (Source: Xitek.).

According to one source Sony will disclose a new FE lens roadmap right before Photokina. And he said there will be certainly a fast 85mm prime. He didn’t unveil specs and pricing info about the lens. Very unreliable rumor floating around the web say this could be a Zeiss 85mm f/1.8 lens. One thing is sure: Sony FE lens designer Naoki Miyagawa said he is “dreaming” about an ultra fast 85mm FE lens (Source: Lesnumeriques -google translation here).

The new Laser Scanning Microscope ZEISS LSM 880 with Airyscan

With Airyscan, our colleagues from ZEISS Microscopy just introduced a new confocal technology, which offers a new dimension of fast and sensitive superresolution microscopy. Instead of detecting signals with a single point detector and rejecting out-of-focus emission light at the pinhole, a multichannel area detector with 32 elements collects all the light from an Airy disk simultaneously. Hereby, each detector element functions as a single, very small pinhole.

Knowing the beam path and the spatial distribution of each Airy disk enables very light-efficient imaging: researchers can now use all of the photons that the objective collected. Visit www.zeiss.com/lsm880 to learn all details.

(SR2) Some possible RX2 zoom lens specs.

I am very confident we will soon get a new RX camera with curved sensor and 35mm f/1.8 Zeiss lens. But according to an anonymous (and new source) there could be a second RX FF camera with a zoom lens and “classic” non curved sensor. He says the new RX2 will feature the same A7r 36 MP sensor and have a 35-70mm f/2.8 compact zoom lens.

Like I said, this is a new source so take it with a grain of salt. As a side note: Sony itself said it’s very difficult to design zoom lenses for a curved sensor so that could be the reason why such a camera still uses the normal flat sensor.

Paul:Hello! I’ve made an A77m2 review. It’s in russian, so not very useful for SAR readers, but it has great pictures with noise tests using different kinds of processing. JPEG, multoshot and RAW using DXO. Looks very impressive, appears that ISO up to 6400 is perfectly usable. The review address is http://ift.tt/1ovyY0a

Jacob: “I posted a review about shooting weddings with the RX10 on my wife and I’s website but no actually reads our blogs. I thought it might be helpful for others. http://ift.tt/1soTwbE

Dave: “I thought you might like to have a look at, and hopefully share, A couple of Gigapixel photos I’ve recently taken with my 7r. Both were taken with a Gigapan Epic Pro head, the 7r body, and a Nikkor 180mm 2.8 ED lens. The combination of high megapixel count and the super sharp Nikkor lens is producing amazing results.

Paul:I just thought I’d share with you something that may be of interest to some users. As you know, the Phigmenttech LM-NEX adapter is the only M-mount -> E-mount adapter that provides EXIF data and focus coupling What may not be apparent is that this adapter is also the only adapter (for any lens mount -> E mount) that can provide lens profiles to the camera. I have recently updated my site and firmware that allows for easier configuration of the adapter. It is now possible to upload a sample “white wall” shot to my site and have a custom profile generated that will apply real-time vignetting (and experimentally cast) correction (It looks like there is a limit of approximately 1 stop correction). My site provides an example (sorry, research and development has taken away from my time to actually take pictures) of vignetting and cast correction.

http://ift.tt/1ovyY0i. It may be prudent to disclose that vignetting (and possibly cast) corrections ARE baked in to the raw data. (at least it is in my NEX-7 and A7R)

(SR3) Source: Don’t rule out the possibility to see a “Full Frame NEX-7″.

Last week I posted a Photokina rumor roundup on SAR (article here). After that a very long time trusted source contacted me and said the following:

He knows for sure that Sony developed a sort of Full Frame NEX-7 prototype. While he has not heard anything yet about a real release at Photokina he said I shouldn’t rule out the possibility that Sony may announce this camera in September!

Gosh, I would certainly welcome such a camera!
