(SR1) Zeiss Ikon (made by Sony) coming late 2014.

Share

This is one of the most curious (and highly unlikely to happen) rumors I received the last couple of weeks:

“Sony/Zeiss manufactured by Sony will release a FF camera similar to the 35mm Ikon (here on eBay). No optical viewfinder. Will be announced before the end of the year. Manual controls. No REAR LCD!!!”

I certainly would like Zeiss to make some “retro” styled E-mount camera. But I really don’t think Zeiss will do that…

This was taken the day after I got my A7s. I wasn’t comfortable with the camera yet and had mistakenly had the camera set to auto ISO. This was shot at night lit with a single flash with a beauty dish on it. Because it was dark the ISO defaulted to 12800 which I noticed as we were drive home. I thought the shoot was ruined but with a bit of photoshopping and texture layers I got something I’m pretty happy with….even though its shot at 12800 ISO. Really liking this camera

Note: UPDATED Zeiss FE 16-35mm preorder links list:

Zeiss 16-35mm FE at Amazon, Adorama, BHphoto, Sony Store US.

Zeiss 16-35mm FE in Europe at Sony DE, UK, ES, IT, FR, CH, AT, NL, BE, FI, SE, NO, PT.

Zeiss 16-35mm FE in Australia and Asia at Sony AUS and Digitalrev.

The very first full Zeiss 16-35mm FE lens review has been posted by the Chinese site Mobile01 (bad google translation here). Note that google translation tool misses to load all images therefore click on the original korean link to see them all. You can download all images (RAW and JPG) here. Because the google translation tool sucks on showing the images I directly link you to the test images:

Distortion at 16mm: image here

Cool “astral” test: image here

These are some of the reviewer thoughts on the lens:

– Very high optical quality (good resolving power even on the edge). It only gets soft from f/16 towards.

– Slight flare issues in some conditions

– Some purple fringing wide open (easily to correct in PS)- not really fast autofocus on the A7s- no barrel distortion, results are perfect (and that’s one of the key reasons you buy a wide angle lens!).

Did you know how the State Hermitage restores archaeological objects?

The archaeological collection of the State Hermitage in St. Petersburg comprises over 2.7 million items. But before these can be shown to the visitors, the artifacts must firstly pass through the hands of the experienced restorers and their ZEISS microscopes.

Above all, the ZEISS microscopes mounted on an adjustable arm serve to remove contamination or coats of paint from old and sensitive surfaces. In the case of glass, even the tiniest fragments are pieced back together.

Zeiss 16-35mm FE lens first impression review by Colby Brown.

Share

Colby Brown (Click here) got the new 16-35mm FE Zeiss and posted his first impression review:

When you hold it in your hand, it doesn’t feel cheap. It feels solid. Why? Because instead of using plastic like many camera/lens manufacturers these days, they use a metal finish, both for the lens body itself and for the focus ring, which truly does make a difference when you are holding it in your hands. On top of this, the lens is listed as dust and water resistant, a feature I plan on putting to the test since a hurricane is currently moving through Hawaii as we speak.

As confirmed by Sony that Asian-Lady friendly Sony KW1 camera is the first using the Sony curved sensor. And according to Androidorigin the next Xperia Z4 will sue a curved sensor too. I hope to have a solid rumor about the curved sensor RX2 with 35mm f/1.8 Zeiss soon. All we need to know is the release date. Not sure it will be January already. But I hope so :)

New Loxia tests (Digglloyd, Verybiglobo, DSLRmagazine, Kasayapa).

Zeiss_Loxia_50_f2_Pro_Sony_A7R_A-3

The Zeiss Loxia 50mm is now shipping in some countries (like in here in Germany) and first reviewers are testing it:

Diglloyd writes:

I now have the 35/2 and 50/2 Zeiss Loxia lenses in hand. From an ergonomics standpoint alone they are terrific, and these are the lenses I would choose as a Sony A7s/A7/A7R shooter for many purposes. The Loxia lenses are extremely well built, an entirely better feel in the hand than the plasticky Sony/Zeiss 35/2.8 and 55/1.8 designs.

Verybiglobo also tested the lens and writes:

While Sony FE 55/1.8 is optimized for high resolution and contrast at wide apertures, Loxia is rather oriented to smooth rendering wide open. But stopped down, to f/5.6 and smaller, Loxia probably even surpass Sonnar FE 55 in terms of sharpness. In fact, you have too lenses in one – nice portrait lens where due to some coma and bit of SA, you can notice characteristic bokeh and unique subject isolation, while stopped down it is great multipurpose and landscape lens.

Spanish DSLRmagazine (translation here) writes about the 50mm Loxia:

We can at least confirm that this Planar 50mm f/2 performs as well as expected, a nice optical use, simple in concept and convincing results.

There is also a Japanese Loxia 50mm review at Kasayapa (translation here). Overall the lens looks to be more interesting than expected. A great alternative of the 55mm FE if you want to focus…on manual focusing :)

Michael:Now I can feel the Full-Frame on my APS-C camera SONY A6000 with Mitakon Speedmaster 50mm F/0.95. Full album @ http://goo.gl/x7wuJz

Pros:

- The build quality of lens is excellent, solid and HEAVY (in good way!)

- The box that made by leather do feel good too!

- The focus ring do turn smoothly.

- The aperture ring a bit hard to turn, but I personally take that as good to avoid change the aperture accidentally.

- Do feel nice on hand with the A6000 for the size and the look.

Cons:

- The plastic hood do feel “cheap” (just a little bit), therefore I get a metal one.

- The weight made it a bit hard to manual focus, because the hand must support the lens more than the body.

New Zeiss 16-35mm FE review by Brian Matiash.

Brian Matiash from Photofocus (Click here) reviewed the new 16-35mm f/4.0 FE Zeiss lens:

Images produced with this lens are very sharp and consistent with minimal softness in the corners. I also didn’t notice any chromatic aberration with photos taken at locations with very high dynamic ranges…As far as I’m concerned, this is a Must-Have lens for all of the Sony A7 shooters out there.

50mm Loxia vs 55mm FE and vs 50mm Leica.

Comparison by DearSusans.

We got another confirmation those Loxia lenses aren’ts just a ZM lens with E-mount. DearSusans (Click here) compared the Zeiss Loxia 50/2 with the Sony FE55/1.8 and Leica Summicron 50/2:

It’s no hard for me to admit I wasn’t expecting it to be this good and considered it to be a half-ass effort by Zeiss to cash in on an old design, much like the 7 re-editions of Star-Wars, for instance. The truth is Zeiss seem to have produced a gem. And I wish them well on the cashing-in.

Diglloyd: Zeiss 35mm ZM Rendering Style Sets New Benchmark. But doesn’t work well on the A7.

Digglloyd is the first reviewer that has tested the new Zeiss ZM 35mm f/1.4 lens and writes:

It is unequivocally the star of the ZM lineup. In terms of operational excellence, I rank it above all my Leica M lenses.” And “Rendering Style Sets New Benchmark”.

But there is also a bad news:

but what a pity that the thick sensor cover glass of Sony A7-family cameras degrades its ultra high grade performance via ray angle (as with all wide angle M lenses).

I do hope Zeiss will release an optimized “Loxia” version of this lens in 2015!

World Sight Day

20 to 30 minutes - just the time some people take for breakfast - can bring light into the darkness of visually impaired people: this is the time a cataract surgery takes.

Here are a few more facts of the World Sight Day:

* Worldwide, about 40 million people are blind

* Every fourth person, a total of around 285 million people, have a moderate or severe visual impairment

* Each year, 1-2 million people go blind

This year, the 'Call to Action' for World Sight Day is “No more Avoidable Blindness”: about 80% of visual impairment could be avoided.

For more information on the ZEISS commitment for better eyesight around the world go to http://ift.tt/1skSDm8
