Happy 175th Birthday Ernst Abbe!
Today, 23 January 2015 marks the 175th anniversary of the birth of Ernst Abbe (1840 – 1905). The physicist and part owner in optics company ZEISS and of the special glass manufacturer SCHOTT AG in Jena was not only an excellent scientist and entrepreneur, but also a generator of ideas and founder of the Carl Zeiss Foundation, as well as an important social reformer. His pioneering scientific discoveries on optics established a scientific basis for the construction of microscopes. With the founding of the Carl Zeiss Foundation in 1889 in Jena, he created a corporate model for ZEISS and SCHOTT which is still unique even now. His life's work endures to this day.
