Cooperation of ZEISS with the Graduate School of Optics and Photonics in Karlsruhe, Germany
Did you know that the Karlsruhe School of Optics and Photonics KSOP (KIT) (KSOP) offers an innovative program of masters and doctorate courses? In conjunction with ZEISS, the school provides students with the possibility of gaining insights into practice. Read the interview with Tuan Anh to find out more about the interchange between theory and practice.
• Can you tell us who you are and about your background?
Tuan Anh: My Name is Tuan Anh. Before coming to Germany, I studied photonics and lasers. For me, Germany has the most advances in the field of optics and engineering, and when I read the KSOP brochure, I found it was the perfect match for my needs.
• Could you tell us a bit about your work at ZEISS and the topic of your Master’s thesis?
Tuan Anh: The topic of my thesis is to test a lightfield camera on the optical metrology machine. I work in the sensoric department. My job here is to conduct measurements to qualify optical sensors, specifically making the setup, deriving a mathematical model, taking measurements and doing statistical analysis.
• How do you like Oberkochen?
Tuan Anh: I personally like small towns. I really like the local area here. The weather is quite nice in the summer, the air is fresh and the surroundings are quiet. There are many hills and small towns around that I can travel to in my leisure time.
• What do you like most about the KSOP Master’s Program and what part of your studies best prepares you for your career?
Tuan Anh: I really like the international environment in KSOP - you have different people from different countries and this offers you the possibility to open your eyes a little bit more. Concerning my studies, my plan for the future is to go into the field of systems engineering, so I really like the diverse topics that they offer in KSOP. I have been able to learn a lot from both the engineering and theoretical perspectives, and gain a basic understanding in a very broad field of optics.
• What do you like most about your job at ZEISS?
Tuan Anh: For me, it´s the perfect mixture because I can do a lot of different things. My first impression was really good. My co-workers are very knowledgeable and helpful. Also, I can learn about the workflow here and about how to solve engineering problems effectively.
• What are your future plans?
Tuan Anh: I will finish my thesis in September Then, I would like to pursue further studies for a few more years, to do something challenging and exciting. Germany is still a good option for me at the moment for a PhD in the field of optical engineering.
