ZEISS Location in Focus – Planetariums Jena, Germany

Besides being home to the world’s longest operating planetarium, Jena is also the manufacturing location of the latest planetarium technologies. ZEISS has been producing opto-mechanical planetarium projectors since 1923 and digital planetarium projectors since 2003. The Zeiss Planetarium Jena features a UNIVERSARIUM projector that projects 9100 stars onto the 23-meter dome. The glass fiber optics that produce the brightly shining stars are threaded by hand. The star projector is combined with a VELVET System which was specially developed by ZEISS and produced for 360-degree fulldome projection. This system enables extremely high-resolution films, videos and visualizations piloted live – such as the space flight through the universe – to be projected onto the dome surface. ZEISS offers different projectors for every dome size, from the large dome like the one in the world's largest planetarium in Nagoya, Japan to the unique solution for the Grand Casino in Baden, Switzerland.
